Stefanie Shamila Pillai (PhD) is a Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya (UM), and currently heads the Social Advancement and Happiness Research Cluster at UM. Her main research interests include the sound system of the Malaysian variety of English, language use in multilingual contexts (including language education and language policy) as well as language documentation and language revitalisation. She has been working with community representatives to produce materials to encourage the use of Melaka Portuguese, one of the many endangered languages in Malaysia. At the national level, Stefanie has evaluated professional development courses for English language teachers and contributed to the Roadmap for English Language Education document. She is also a member of the taskforce for the national higher institutions’ research centres of excellence programme.
