The jackalope is a mythical beast of the American West, in the form of a jackrabbit with horns like those of a deer or pronghorn antelope.
The earliest evidence of the creature’s name found so far by OED researchers is from a newspaper article written in 1950, but the article includes an (apparently facetious) reference to a jackalope sighting in 1829. Less fanciful accounts suggest that the jackalope was invented by a taxidermist in Douglas, Wyoming in the 1930s.
Can you help us find earlier evidence of the word jackalope?
